|A sketch that simulates the woodcut engraving with Zabadal Woodcut Brushes for Gimp, by Americo, 2012.|
The series of videos are the samples of different brushes, litographic, drypoint, red chalk, round and woodcut. The last video is about the Woodcut technique on computer with a small tutorial about my approach. The videos are only audio in Portuguese but soon I'll write the English captions!
The complete Brush series for Gimp of L'ubomir Zabadal you can download here:
You can read also the last article about the series in: http://forksanddrills.blogspot.com/2012/12/zabadal-brushes-for-forks-and-drills.html, but only in Portuguese, sorry :)
Drypoint is a printmaking technique of the intaglio family, in which an image is incised into a plate (or "matrix") with a hard-pointed "needle" of sharp metal or diamond point.
Movie about the brushes for Drypoint Etching Technique on computer.Traditionally the plate was copper, but now acetate, zinc, or plexiglas are also commonly used. Like etching, drypoint is easier for an artist trained in drawing to master than engraving, as the technique of using the needle is closer to using a pencil than the engraver's burin. Lithography (from Greek λίθος - lithos, 'stone' + γράφειν - graphein, 'to write') is a method for printing using a stone (lithographic limestone) or a metal plate with a completely smooth surface.
Movie with samples and strokes of the Litographic Brushes.Invented in 1796 by German author and actor Alois Senefelder as a cheap method of publishing theatrical works, lithography can be used to print text or artwork onto paper or other suitable material. Sanguine or Red Chalk is chalk of a reddish-brown colour, so called because it resembles the colour of dried blood.
Movie with samples and strokes of the Red Chalk Brushes. It has been popular for centuries for drawing (where white chalk only works on coloured paper), and the term also describes a drawing done in sanguine. The word comes via French from the Italian sanguigna. [From Wikipedia]
Round Brushes - I think useful to talk a bit about the round brushes... many digital artists use the round brushes in their works.
Movie with samples and strokes of the Round Brushes.I've found some videos that for me is very useful to understand how to use the round brushes on digital painting.
The first video is how the ilustrator, Darkeen, uses this brush for a classical work:
or directly on vimeo:
Another reference very interesting is in a discussion thread on conceptart.org, a bit dated but is very useful. Some tips we need to make the modifications for Gimp e perhaps also to Mypaint. The link is here:
Woodcut -- occasionally known as xylography -- is a relief printing artistic technique in printmaking in which an image is carved into the surface of a block of wood, with the printing parts remaining level with the surface while the non-printing parts are removed, typically with gouges. Movie with a short tutorial how to you can use the Woodcut Brushes.
